UK Heatwave - July 2013

During July 2013, many parts of the UK experienced a heatwave which saw temperatures reach above 30 c in many areas, giving conditions that the UK hadn’t experienced since 2006. Up to 760 people reportedly died as a result of the heatwave conditions.

The highest temperature recorded in the UK exceeded 28 degrees celcius for 19 consecutive days and reached 30c for 7 consecutive days from 13th of July to the 19th of July. The highest temperature reached was at Heathrow (33.5c).

The prolonged hot spell prompted the Met Office to issue level three heatwave health warnings for northwest and southwest England, and the West Midlands after a similar alert for Londonand the South East on Wednesday 17 July.

Level three warnings are only one notch below the most serious alerts and are put out when high temperatures place the very young, the very old and those with chronic diseases at risk.
